What you should expect in a "Malia In Hawaii" format lesson
Each lesson is 60 minutes while embracing these components:

A Yoga-Stretch warm up with muscle isolating gentle stretches
Ribcage and upper torso drills
Shoulder, head and hands drills
Belly locks, flutter and roll drills
Hips, pelvis and lower torso drills
Feet and leg drills
Shimmy Cardio segment
Combinations and choreography segment
Ending with a Traveling Improv exercise

No previous dance experience needed



Class tips:
Attire: Clothing that is cool and comfortable and you may show your torso if you feel comfortable

Feet: Bare feet recommended and Aerobic shoes may be worn

Accessories: Hip scarves may be worn to accentuate your hip movements, all styles accepted.

Food and Beverages: No food or drinks near dance floor,
non-breakable containers with lids approved.

Personal belongings: Please do not leave anything where it could present a safety hazard. "Malia In Hawaii" or dance studio in not responsible for your personal property.

Children: No children allowed in studio while class is in progress.

Q: I have a book or a DVD on Belly Dance, is this a good way to start Belly Dance?

A: Due to the popularity of Belly Dance, there are now many books and DVD's on the market. It is important that you find a competent teacher to guide you in your practice. The role of the teacher is to observe the students and to provide individualized adjustments and instructions to prevent students from developing poor habits which may lead to injury or misconception. Students should enroll in Belly Dance Classes and commit themselves at least once a week, and stick with it so that they develop an understanding of how to correctly move and breathe with Technique in a fluid motion.

Q: If I have problems with my health, can I participate in Belly Dance Class?

A: A student who pays attention to the teacher and who practices intelligently will not harm, but will often help, a weakened physical condition. If you have a physical problem or medical condition, please inform your teacher before class begins, so that the teacher may give individualized attention to help with your approach to the Belly Dance Movements. Please also get your doctors approval before beginning any new physical activity.


Q: I am embarrassed to join a class because I am so stiff or un-coordinated. Do I need to be flexible and strong to join class?

A: Belly Dance is for everyone. Your teacher will provide you with instructions and adjustments, Gradually flexibility is gained and coordination will be improved over a period of time as students work within their own limitations.

Q: Will Belly Dance Classes help me to lose weight?

A: With the practice of Belly Dance, students will feel comfortable in their bodies and gain control all while sculpting and toning. You'll learn to appreciate your body in a comfortable environment while burning calories and inches in a belly cardio workout.
